The economy in eastern Ukraine (the Donbass region) is dominated by heavy industry and large corporations. This economic structure is, however, poorly suited to the times, and there is a massive need for adaptation; the region is grappling with significant increases in unemployment, which can be both economically and socially problematic.
Vocational training can contribute significantly to the adaptation process, mitigating the disruptive effects and providing employment opportunities in new businesses and SMEs.
Berlin Economics has advised the Donetsk Chamber of Commerce and leading large companies on this issue, utilizing German experience gained in the 1970s in the Ruhr Valley and during the incorporation of East German federal states in the 90s.
A planned continuation of the project, which would have involved the local government, could not be continued due to the ongoing conflict in the region.
