Berlin Economics at the 16th European-Ukrainian Energy Day in Berlin

On 05 November, Berlin Economics participated in the 16th European-Ukrainian Energy Day held in Berlin. The event was organised by the European-Ukrainian Energy Agency under the theme “Ukraine Reimagined: Investing in Renewables and Storage.”

Robert Kirchner, Head of our Energy and Climate Policy Team, moderated the panel on “Unlocking Biomethane Potential: Opportunities and Challenges”. The discussion focused on Ukraine’s pilot biomethane exports to the EU and the country’s role in helping close the EU’s biomethane production gap. The panellists also discussed prospects for supplying Ukrainian biomethane to German and other European consumers, highlighting the importance of secure market access for Ukraine’s EU accession and long-term economic resilience.

During the session, Florian Willershausen from UAG Energy shared the findings of our joint study on import barriers for Ukrainian biomethane to Germany. The results show that while exporting biomethane to the EU is technically and economically viable, regulatory and administrative procedures must be streamlined on both the Ukrainian and EU sides to fully unlock this potential.

We thank Anastasiia Vereshchynska and the entire team of the European-Ukrainian Energy Agency for the kind invitation and excellent organisation of the event.
