Webinar series “Team Germany” – Working together to rebuild Ukraine
The webinar series “Team Germany” – Working together to rebuild Ukraine is a joint initiative of the German Eastern Business Association and PwC Germany. In cooperation with associations, companies, and experts, several events were held.
The aim of the series was to promote exchange between German companies and provide an overview of existing support options and opportunities for engagement in Ukraine.
Berlin Economics contributed to three events in the series.
The first webinar took place on 30 June and focused on “Construction Industry, Building Materials, Raw Materials”. Robert Kirchner presented an overview of the role of the construction sector in Ukraine’s economic development and reconstruction opportunities. The presentation gave important insights into current trends in the Ukrainian construction sector and highlighted opportunities and challenges for German investment. Despite the urgent need for reconstruction, the sector remains far below pre-war levels, with labour shortages posing a major obstacle. Garry Poluschkin also took part in the event and moderated the discussion on opportunities and challenges for German investment into the sector of raw materials. Overall, the webinar revealed strong interest among German companies in the reconstruction of Ukraine, but at the same time discussed approaches for overcoming investment challenges.
On 27 August, the webinar on “Energy Supply, Energy Technology, and Renewable Energies” took place. Robert Kirchner presented the key findings of our study on Ukraine’s potential for localising value chains for solar PV, wind turbines, and lithium-ion batteries. Localising production could open up significant opportunities for Ukraine’s energy and industrial sectors while supporting the country’s economic recovery and its integration into EU value chains. However, a well-coordinated industrial policy is crucial to advancing the manufacture of green technologies in Ukraine. The study can be found here.
During the webinar series on “Infrastructure, Transport, Logistics” on 12 September, Garry Poluschkin presented the results of our study on the impact of the EU Solidarity Lane on road-based trade. The support measures, adopted in June 2022, eliminated permit requirements for freight transport between Ukraine and the EU. The analysis shows that without the solidarity lanes, Ukrainian road-based trade with the EU would have been substantially lower between 2022 and 2024. The agreement therefore contributed significantly to the resilience of Ukrainian trade, but a stable long-term framework is needed for the future. The complete analysis can be found here.
We would like to thank the German Eastern Business Association and its partners for organizing the webinar series and for their cooperation.
