Dr Susanne Nies
General Manager Germany, Smart Wires Inc.
Susanne Nies is General Manager for Germany at Smart Wires Inc. Before joining Smart Wires, she headed the Department for Strategy and Communications at the European Association of Transmission System Operators, ENTSO-E, Brussels.
She earned a PhD and a Habilitation in political science, slavic and romance studies (University of Bonn, the Free University Berlin, Sciences Po Paris and the London School of Economics). Initially, her focus areas were Eastern Europe and European integration, before specialising in the energy sector and energy regulation. Hereby, she is particularly interested in network-based forms of energy, such as natural gas and electricity.
She has worked for the Heinrich Böll Stiftung, Free University Berlin, CIFE Nice, Sciences Po Paris, CERI, IFRI and IRIS, as well as Eurelectric Brussels.
In November 2020, she supported Berlin Economics with consultancy in energy policy. In this field, Susanne Nies has been lecturer at the training “EU energy law for Ukrainian policy makers”, jointly organised by Berlin Economics and the NGO DiXi Group. In this training, decision makers from the Ukrainian Cabinet of Ministry, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Agriculture, the Ministry for Regional Development, the Ministry of Energy, Ministry of Environment, from the Verkhovna Rada and further institutions have taken part in her lectures.
