Socio-economic transition and just transition planning for Ukrainian coal regions
On behalf of the World Bank, Berlin Economics, together with the Institute for Economic Research and Policy Consulting, supported Ukrainian stakeholders in developing Just Transition Plans for three coal-dependent regions.
It assessed energy transition options and the socio-economic impacts of coal phase-out, focusing on sustainable alternatives for these communities.
The project applied techno-economic modelling at community, regional, and national levels to evaluate various energy generation options and their financial and emissions impacts. By supporting local energy transition planning, it contributed to Ukraine’s national decarbonisation efforts, providing policy-relevant assessments for replacing coal-fired capacity with low-carbon alternatives.
