Economic Impact of HIV in Ukraine

Source of Funding: Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ)

Period: 2008

The adult HIV prevalence rate in Ukraine grew from 0.8% in 2001 to 1.6% in 2007. The doubling of the number of infected between 2001 and 2007 (210,000 to 440,000) resulted in Ukraine having the highest HIV-positive rate in Europe.

The study analyses the impact of the HIV epidemic on the economic development in Ukraine to provide policy makers and other stakeholders (e.g. managers) with arguments for increasing the response to HIV/AIDS.

In the course of this project we established links with national and international HIV/AIDS experts that are ready to conduct a follow up study on building a model for the most cost-effective approach to combat HIV/AIDS in Ukraine.
